Trestle is the final sculpture in Paula Castillo’s three-part commission for the shared Denver Art Museum and Denver Central Library campus. Installed near the Denver Art Museum’s Hamilton Building, the work takes the form of a monumental, truss-like gateway inspired by railroad bridges and the history of Denver’s growth.

Thousands of stainless steel hummingbird feathers are welded across a series of ascending arches, connecting the strength and rhythm of industrial infrastructure with the delicacy of a bird in flight. The railroad bridge serves as a symbol of movement, migration, and the collective labor that helped transform Denver, while the hummingbird—revered as a healer—brings ideas of persistence, harmony, and community into the work.

Working with Paula Castillo and Public Art Services, Elmendorf Geurts fabricated and installed the sculpture, translating its intricate feathered surfaces and increasing arches into a durable public artwork.
